What are Wireless Microphones?

Wireless microphones are microphone systems that comprise of a microphone and a transmitter that connect to a receiver wirelessly, i.e not via physical cabling. Powered by batteries, wireless microphones provide more freedom of movement when used in comparison to traditional wired microphones i.e. no annoying wires in the way.

Should I use Wireless or Wired Microphones?

The main thing to consider when buying microphones are how they will connect to their respective recording devices–wirelessly or not. Both options pose their own pros and cons.

Price

The main difference between the two types of microphones is price. As the wireless technology needs to be reliable to transmit audio at a high quality, the price is reflected in this. Wired microphones are far more money friendly, but come at the cost of having a physical cable that can cause its own problems such as rubbing, fraying or tearing.

Cordless

It should come as no surprise that wireless microphones come without wires. This is the main selling point of the wireless option. Issues that may arise while using wires are non-existent while using wireless microphones -tripping or getting tangled up for example. The person wearing the wireless microphone doesn’t have to worry about venturing too far from the receiver and getting the other end of the cable yanked out.

Power

Wired microphones tend to be powered by the device at the other end of the cable, such as a phone, laptop or camera. With wireless microphones, battery power comes into play. When filming with wireless microphones the person behind the camera will have to be aware of the battery life of the microphones and will be under a time limit to capture the audio that just isn’t an issue with wired microphones.
