Normally, only one transmitter and one receiver is needed, the receiver is connected to one flash head and any other heads are triggered by their own slave cells.
But event and wedding photographers, and photographers who are working in a studio environment with other photographers in the same room, will need to plug a receiver into each head and switch off their slave sensors, to prevent their flash being fired by other cameras/flashes.
